Welcome to Europe

“I am delighted that through the ‘Welcome to Europe’ season we are being given the opportunity to see the work of film-makers from the 10 new member states. Cinema can fuel imaginations and spark interest in new ideas, new ways of seeing and different ways of living. Our Cultural Programme aims to celebrate the diversity that is the enlarged European Union and this short season of films is a cornerstone of that celebration.”
John O’Donoghue TD,
Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism
To mark Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union and the imminent historic accession to the EU, the 2nd Jameson Dublin International Film Festival proudly presents a showcase of new cinema from the accession countries.
This is part of the extensive Cultural Programme, which will see over 250 Irish artists and hundreds of European artists presenting work across the expanded EU, as one of the central features of the Irish Presidency which runs until June 2004.
Welcome to Europe, which will run over five consecutive days during the festival, will present stimulating new movies from Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Cyprus and the Czech Republic.
We are delighted that so many of the filmmakers have accepted our invitation to attend the festival and to introduce their films.
This event will also serve as a rare opportunity for Dublin cinema audiences to savour the achievements of these filmmakers, as only one of these films has an Irish distribution arrangement in place at present. The festival greatly appreciates the support of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in making this event possible.
